ABC - (not) Another Beethoven Cycle

s t a r g a z e was founded in 2013 in Berlin. Led by conductor André de Ridder, this ensemble of innovative European musicians is constantly evolving, commissioning widely and collaborating regularly with acts from the progressive pop scene (Owen Pallett, Polica, Villagers and Lisa Hannigan). In less than a decade, s t a r g a z e has built a worldwide reputation, performing frequently for the world's most prestigious venues and festivals (BBC Proms, Holland Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, Rewire, Barbican Center and the Elbphilharmonie). Their programmes combine effortlessly pieces by Berio or Stockhausen with the Boards of Canada or the Beach Boys.

In 2020 s t a r g a z e launched ABC – (not) Another Beethoven Cycle - an alternative Beethoven anniversary celebration reframing Beethoven’s symphonies. In Beethoven 128 Aart Strootman creates a new suite from the 3rd movement of the 1st symphony; Kate Moore, Josephine Stephenson, Nicole Lizee and Sarah Nemtsov recreate all four movements of the 2nd, and composer-performer Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) turns the entire 8th symphony on its head. And they’ve already tackled the monumental 9th working with local choirs.

André de Ridder: “ABC – (not) Another Beethoven Cycle has essentially come out of the question how it would be possible to present a cycle of all of Beethoven’s symphonies (the perceived pinnacle of the classical orchestral repertoire, and benchmark for every such ensemble) as a world-premiere.”
